Dr. Penni Vachon, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC
Primary Care Adult Nurse Practitioner
Dr. Penni Vachon, APRN has been a registered nurse since she graduated with her Associate Degree in Nursing from the New Hampshire Technical Institute in 2004. Dr. Penni Vachon, APRN worked in Adult Ortho/Trauma at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia before moving to South Carolina. Once in Summerville, Dr. Penni began working at MUSC on the Adult Ortho/Trauma unit. She also began working on her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Dr. Penni quickly realized that she wanted a change from a Level I Trauma Center and began working at Trident Hospital in North Charleston, SC. Through the several years that she worked there as a Patient Care Coordinator of the Ortho/Neuro unit she continued her education. Dr. Penni completed her BSN through Excelsior College in Albany, New York in 2009 and immediately began working on her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Penni completed her MSN in 2010 with a focus as an Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Penni is board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Adult Nurse Practitioner.
Upon graduation of her MSN she worked with a local chiropractor to open an integrated medical/chiropractic office. She left that practice joining Roper Physician Partners Orthopedic Surgery as a Surgical Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Penni spent the next 4 years working with Dr. Jim Price at Orthopedic Specialists of Charleston. She developed an educational program for patients of undergoing total shoulder replacement surgery. In addition to assisting in the operating room, having a daily clinic, and teaching the shoulder replacement classes, Dr. Penni remained active on the Roper Physician Partner's Nurse Practitioner and Physician's Assistant committee. Dr. Penni’s dedication to her patients earned her a National 5-Star Award for Patient Satisfaction in 2014.
In May 2015 Dr. Penni began working on her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She focused her doctoral research on a cognitive behavioral therapy to reduce chronic pain in arthritis patients. Dr. Penni is one of less than 50 nurse practitioners in the US certified in Pain Coping Skills Training through a Pfizer grant.
In August of 2018 Dr. Penni opened the Lowcountry Wellness Center. The office is conveniently located at the corner of Paul Cantrell Blvd. and Tobias Gadson Blvd., next to the Social Security office in West Ashley. She is growing her practice with a love of nursing, nurturing, and a holistic approach to care.
Dr. Penni is actively involved in the local nurse practitioner community, the Lowcountry Advanced Practice Nurses. She is also an active member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American Nurses Association, and the South Carolina Nurses Association.
Dr. Penni has taught classes on pain management and orthopedics at nurse practitioner conventions and meetings. She also precepts nurse practitioner students from various nursing schools, including the Medical University of South Carolina School of Nursing. To continue her passion of teaching, she also tutors doctoral nursing students.
Dr. Penni is excited to help her patients improve their quality of life. She believes in a holistic approach to treating her patients. She treats her patients as she would if they were family, with caring and kindness.
Heidi began working full-time with Lowcountry Wellness Center in the Fall of 2018. She is a dedicated wellness advocate and along with Dr. Penni she brings a holistic touch to the practice through her business, Innovative Wellness. Heidi is a believer and user of essential oils, supplements, and complementary medicine. She has extensive training in Essential Oils and has learned the Vibrational Raindrop technique through Young Living.
She is a dedicated wife and mother of 2 amazing sons. She married her high school sweetheart 24 years ago! After moving around with her husband during his Navy tenure, they settled in the Summerville area in 2009. Her oldest son is an Eagle Scout and her youngest son is in the process of obtaining his Eagle Scout. Both of her boys have been heavily involved in sports, particularly soccer.
Heidi is also the rescue mom of a Pomeranian and a cat. In her free time she enjoys traveling, watching her sons participate in sports, and spending time with her family.
