Sacroiliitis is another in a long list of diagnoses that is less a direct condition in and of itself, but serves to describe a symptom that often times is the result of another related or unrelated condition.  The term refers to inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, a pair of broad-based joints that are the direct connection between the base of the spine and the hip.  Sacroiliitis is sometimes a featured symptom of a series of inflammatory conditions of the spinal column, collectively referred to as “spondyloarthropathies”, including such conditions as ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.  It can also be found as a characteristic symptom of other inflammatory conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.  Sacroiliitis is often a characteristic of, and used interchangeably with, a condition called sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

The most common symptom of sacroiliitis is pain, frequently localized to the low back/buttocks region, but sometimes also affecting the groin, legs, and feet.  The pain is aggravated by activities that involve significant stress across the sacroiliac joint, such as prolonged walking or standing, uneven weightbearing, climbing stairs, running, and lying on the affected side.  The pain is often more severe first thing in the morning.  The common nature of the symptom pattern sometimes makes it difficult to obtain an accurate diagnosis, and therefore initial treatment plans will frequently concentrate on symptom relief alone.

Proper treatment and/or management of sacroiliitis completely depends upon proper diagnosis of the underlying cause.  If the symptomsin the joint are being caused by another more extensive inflammatory condition, then direct reduction of the inflammation utilizing injection therapy or anti-inflammatory medications is useful to reduce the pain while the main condition is being managed.  However, the most common cause of sacroiliitis is mechanical or postural irritation, and the underlying mechanical issue needs to be directly addressed if the condition is to be completely resolved.  Treatment plans for these types of underlying conditions include direct chiropractic adjustment of the sacroiliac joint(s), physical rehabilitation stretches and exercises, injection therapy, PRP and stem cell therapy, and cold laser therapy.  At Lowcountry Wellness Center, our team of doctors will provide a complete review of your medical history as well as a comprehensive physical assessment in order to give you a treatment plan customized to your specific condition, and give you the best chance for rapid and complete recovery.  Call us at (843) 793-1353 to schedule your consultation appointment today!
