🔬 Q-REstrain (SOT): What It Is and What to Know

Posted by the Nurse Practitioners at Lowcountry Wellness Center

When you have been dealing with long-term, hard-to-explain symptoms, it is natural to look for new options and to want clear answers about them. You may have heard of Q-REstrain, formerly known as Supportive Oligonucleotide Therapy, or SOT.

This article explains how it is described, what the process involves, and what is not yet known, so you can ask informed questions. It is for education only and is not a recommendation for any treatment.

🧬 What Is Q-REstrain?

Q-REstrain is a therapy that uses oligonucleotides, which are short, lab-made strands of genetic material. They are designed to match a specific genetic sequence. The idea behind this type of approach is that a matching strand can attach to its target sequence and interfere with how that sequence is used.

Each person’s therapy is described as being custom-made to match a specific target, which is why the process is individualized.

Important: Q-REstrain has not been evaluated or approved by the FDA to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Published clinical research on how well it works and how safe it is for any condition is limited.

🩺 What the Process Involves

Every practice is different, and your provider will explain your specific plan. In general, the process described for this therapy includes:

  • A full evaluation of your symptoms, history, and previous care
  • Specialty laboratory testing when your provider decides it is appropriate. These tests have limits, and results need to be interpreted along with your symptoms and history
  • A custom-made preparation from a specialty facility, which can take time to produce
  • An intravenous (IV) infusion given in the office under clinical supervision
  • Follow-up to monitor how you are doing

❓ Questions to Ask Your Provider

Before starting any therapy that is new or not FDA-approved, it helps to understand your options. Consider asking:

  • What is the goal of this therapy for me, and how will we know if it is helping?
  • What is known and not known about its safety and effectiveness?
  • What are the possible side effects and risks?
  • What are my other options, including standard medical treatments?
  • How will this fit with the medications and supplements I already take?
  • What will it cost, and what is not covered?

Therapies like this are not a replacement for standard medical care. If you have been diagnosed with an infection or another condition, please keep working with your doctors on proven treatments.

⚠️ Safety to Know About

Any IV treatment carries risks, such as bruising, irritation at the IV site, infection, and allergic reactions. Because this therapy has not been studied in large clinical trials, its long-term effects are not fully known. Please tell your provider about all of your medications and supplements, and whether you are pregnant, nursing, or have any medical conditions.

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for trouble breathing, chest pain, swelling of the face or throat, or severe symptoms after any treatment.
